Alicante: more than 600 kilometers of mountain routes digitally recorded
Written by Costa Blanca Radio on 7 November 2020
The mountains of Alicante are home to many beautiful routes. Thanks to a project of the University of Alicante, everyone can now discover the hidden gems. More than 600 kilometers of mountain routes have been digitally recorded.
The University of Alicante (UA) launched the project “Sendero de Gran Recorrido de la Montaña de Alicante”. This was done in collaboration with the Digital Intelligence Center of the Province of Alicante (CENID), the University Miguel Hernández of Elche (UMH) and 27 local hiking associations. With the help of multiple Google Trekker cameras, 34 stages have been recorded.
Educational project
Over a hundred volunteers from 27 hiking associations helped to capture the images for a few years. The original goal was educational, but something much bigger has now emerged. Scientists, in collaboration with computer science students, want to add even more substantive information in the fields of geology, history, ethnography, art, climatology, agriculture and literature.
They also want to stimulate sustainability through innovative digital strategies. It will take a while before everything is completed. In the meantime, you can enjoy the beautiful images and practical information about the 34 mountain routes.
