L’Alfàs del Pi wins legal battle from INE and exceeds 20,000 registered residents

Written by on 11 December 2018

L’Alfàs del Pi has won a legal battle against INE, the national statistics institute, and exceeds 20,000 registered residents. The municipality has been able to correct a number of 1,659 residents after filing allegations for a 15% decrease in the official figures for 2018.

According to the official count of the INE in 2018, the municipality would have 18 394 inhabitants. The office has accepted arguments from the city council, which did not agree with the loss of more than 3,000 inhabitants in just one year. The total number of registrants from 1 January 2018 is ultimately 20,053 people, 1,659 more than what was initially calculated.

The municipality carried out a door-to-door campaign with local police and municipal technicians to monitor the residents and encourage those who had not updated their registration to do so. It seems that this has paid off.
