The Guardia Civil has put an end to a woman’s nightmare in the hinterland of Alicante. The Algerian woman was locked up in a garage for a year – because she was exploited by two fellow countrymen as a worker in the household. For the couple, she had to work around the clock, not move around freely, and was given so little food that she lost 20 pounds since arriving in Spain in 2020. The woman was found thanks to a tip from a neighbor. She was locked up in a garage in a house in Agost, in the hinterland of Alicante. The suspected Algerian couple has been arrested on charges of human trafficking for the purposes of exploitation, illegal deprivation of liberty and violations of labor rights. Those arrested were entrepreneurs who usually only stayed in Spain seasonally. Due to the pandemic, they stayed on the Costa Blanca for a year.
