Showfact: What Sean Paul REALLY Says in ‘Get Busy’
Written by Costa Blanca Radio on 26 December 2022
Did you always think that Sean Paul shouted ‘Sean de Paul’ at the beginning of every song, as a credit to himself? Well…we do too! But as it turns out he always calls out Chanderpaul as a strange tribute to the cricketer. Last week, VICE launched a short documentary about the origins of “Get Busy,” his very first hit, which is pretty amazing in itself. In January it will be twenty years since the song was released and Sean Paul’s career started. As a bouncer at the documentary, one of the makers, while the credits can already be seen, asks the rapper: “By the way, why the tendency to always call yourself ‘Sean da Paul’?”
To which ‘Sean da Paul’ reveals that he has never called himself that at all, but we have all just misunderstood him for years. *mic drops*
Now the artist formerly known as ‘Sean da Paul’ has never been a talented practitioner of the noble art of articulation, so we can’t really blame ourselves either, but still: huh?
It turns out that in the song in question Sean Paul gave no more than a shout-out to Shivnarine Chanderpaul, a well-known cricketer from Guyana who made waves especially in the nineties. “Chaunderpaul” instead of “Sean da Paul”, but fans loved it. The name caught on, after which Dutty Paul (as he sometimes calls himself these days) adopted it as his unofficial nickname.
